I love the way commentators called Hafez Assad a "shrewd" negotiator. He wasn't shrewd, he just rejected offer that came his way. Calling him shrewd was like calling Chauncey Gardiner brilliant. It was just people reading a quality into his words and actions that just wasn't there. As in this case it was matter of making an assumption that he must be interested in making a settlement with Israel. Once you're working with that (false) premise the rest of the fiction falls into place.
