Gravatar How can they lock the gates and barb wire it?? I thought you were allowed access. It looks like a public way.

Gravatar This beautiful area was once known as "Ashforth Side".

Is there any written history on this land that you know of?

I would most certainly appreciate the opportunity to have more knowledge since my maternal side is "Ashforth"; my mother was first generation American.

Please advise and many thanks, sh

Gravatar I was brought up in upper Nidderdale, there has NEVER!!! been any public access to the bridge along the dam wall at Gouthwaite!!!!!
The gate has always been locked and only key holders had access, my late father being one of them, as we lived at High Holme farm halfway up the side of Gouthwaite reservior.
It may be noted that High Holme was originaly Holme Houses standing in the bottom of the valley but was relocated by Bradford Corporation to the top of the hill when thr reservior was built as a flood prevention measure.
However even the highest water has never come remotley near the original site.
The result of this was that residents at High Holme always held a key to the Reservior gate.

If you had climbed over the style at the reservior gate and made your way up the hill then turned back right at the road/track junction then a return to Pateley Bridge could have been made Via the quary that the stone was hewn from to build the reservior dam wall - Spring wood Top farm then down into Wath and back to Pateley Bridge via the Top Wath Road a much shorter route than the one chosen in your posting.
I wonder how many people watching the T.V.programme Emerdale realise that the opening sequence is flying down this beutiful area from Lofthouse to Ramsgill then over the top end of Gouthwaite Reservior near Colthouse's?
