Even though I'm young (25), I remember IRC and newsgroups. I'd never been asked a/s/l, followed with "private chat" more often in my life.
That's the major reason I avoid those places now.
But hey - you met the non-perverts. Excellent!
I still use a fair few newsgroups, alt.food.wine is excellent, I play around in the football groups and some of the music groups can be interesting.
As you say though, there are a lot of trolls and weirdo's.
