Hello,
"the tower (159769), it is very odd, I can't find any information on it"
Although I have not yet visited it (will do at Christmas)I know that this was a sighting tower for the water board when they laid a pipe to Bradford.
Did you see Bradford through the gap?
Best wishes
Gareth

Thanks for that, if I'm up there again I'll peer through and see if sunny Bradford is visible in the distance.

Strange way of walking around this area. Ur talking rubbish about the tower; Arnagill Tower is further up the valley off to the left, it is not on the skyline, and was a folly built by the Swinton Estate, it is circular with a crenallated top. The tower that u show on both of your photos is the siting tower for Roundhill Reservoir, there is another one above Wandley Gill over 3km away, and there was another 1 to the north, long since gone that was made of wood. They do not look for Bradford, but were in a straightline so that the engineers building the pipeline through the hillside new where they were going. Above Spout Gill Farm the pipe begins at the bottom of a small catchment reservoir, it then flows through the hill side before reaching Roundhill res, here it meets with the overflow pipe from the reservoir and this then travels through to Carlesmoor where it empties out into the Laver to stop too much water puttin pressure on the dam. The Leeds Corporation was going to build another reservoir in Colsterdale but failed to do so because of coal & lead mines in the area. Roundhill and Leighton reservoir were built by the Harrogate Water Corporation (now Yorkshire Water) between 1895 and 1911. The was a small 3foot gauge railway running up from Masham that terminated at Roundhill reservoir, evidense can still be seen on the south side of the dale, and it was not removed until 1932.
Hope that helps you out!
