The shrub is Mahonia aquifolium (syn. Berberis aquifolium, Family Berberidaceae)

also know as:
Oregon Grape, Oregon Grape Holly, Tall Oregon Grape
ma-HO-ni-a a-kwi-FO-lee-um

Grows like a weed in my garden. Has strange roots that bleed a vivid yellow sap.
