Gravatar Senior administration officials said the policy is based on the theory that Tehran will back down from its nuclear ambitions if the United States hits it hard in Iraq and elsewhere

It's hard for me to believe that the predominant view in the WH is to actually believe in a theory this mind-bogglingly, patently stupid. It just can't be.

Gravatar There are the gullible and the cynics. Regardless of the precise distribution of each, the cocktail is potent. I'm starting to get really, really nervous right about now.

Gravatar Nice post Eric. It's interesting to watch the hawks make policies that will almost certainly lead to conflict, and then squeal like pigs that it was the other guys' fault when the conflict actually starts up. It's sort of like complaining about terrorists just after one of our tanks knowingly lobs a shell into an apartment house.

Gravatar Yup. At least for the "gullible" as per above, this is a truly childish worldview: it is dangerously self-centered and self-referential in that it completely fails to appreciate the consequences of actions taken, and the fact that there are actual people on the other end of our ordnance that will react in all too human ways.

Where exceptionalism and solipsism combine. Some call this amalgamation neoconservatism.
