My short answer to this is that you are absolutely right, our two party system is beyond salvage.
I would love to see a viable third party.

I will likely vote in the local campaigns, which are often officially non-partisan anyway. Any office higher than City Council or Mayor, however, will either get the Green, write-in, or silent treatment from me. Screw the duopoly. Screw it sideways.
P.S.-- When life hands you "ammo" made of a single marshmallow, you might as well make hot cocoa. And don't waste it by throwing it in your candidate's face. Your candidate has rent boys and/or dominatrixes he pays good money to do that for him. Oh, wait. In the candidate's case, that's probably not cocoa.

I see the choice as being between 1) frustratingly, sometimes depressingly cowardly, and 2) so evil the nation is crumbling as a result of their control. The stupid electoral system means that choosing "neither of the above" works out in practice to choosing number 2. (Heh. Number 2 indeed.)
Vote your consciences, gals 'n' guys. That's what I'm doing. But I don't perceive a clear "right thing to do" this year, and I'm certainly not going to press you hard to vote my way, not this election at least. Let's hope we all get another chance in four years... I don't regard that as a certainty, especially if McLame ends up in the White House.
