Last I heard (we left ten years ago) handguns are legal in Chicago but they have to be registered. I had a chance to buy a Ruger Single-Six just before registration closed (didn't see that coming, didja?) but the mortgage took precedence. As of now we still have more gun rights in Milwaukee. If our mayor manages to get state approval for a handgun ban here, we're moving again.

Gun laws were one of the things that we looked at when deciding where to move.

Handguns are defacto illegal in Chicago unless
you are police, private instigator, err,
investigator, or had a gun that you registered
previous to 1982 and NEVER lapsed in the yearly
registration process...
The big issue is that Illinois has it written in the
Illinois constrituion that gun rights are subject
to the power of the police. (Read Don Gwinn's
blog from more info-The Armed School Teacher).
This, um, "interesting" legal situation doesn't
exist in Wisconsin; Madison tried to ban
handguns, but they slapped that down pretty fast
since the local G couldn't legally do so.
You know, that state line looks more inviting
every day...
Or you can opt to do what you need to do and
throw all caution to the wind... Which SOME folks
do.
