They could have made the same "intended" joke with something like a clown, like "congress is a bunch of clowns" or "obama is a clown."
A clown getting shot is funny on its own. A shot monkey, it's like, hey man why'd you shoot that monkey?!

Man, and that monkey story is pretty depressing on its own. From what I've read, its damning behavior, extreme aggression toward a female, is completely natural for its age, 15. That is, it had gone through puberty, and was aiming for alpha male status. So it was killed simply for being a chimpanzee. Indeed, its clueless owner downright insisted that police shoot it. No mercy. No understanding that wild animals act wild sometimes. No ownership of responsibility for keeping a wild animal in a way that could be dangerous to human beings.
What the hell is it with people and their exotic pets? Why not a dog or a cat? As far as I can tell, there is only one party responsible for the mauling, the chimp's owner, and she has the blood of both her critically injured friend and her "pet" on her hands.
...and...shooting a clown is funny? I'm satisfied simply by a pie in the face, myself. Or a blast from a seltzer bottle. You know, whatever. Squirting lapel-flowers are good, too.
How about this: they lead the clown into a tiny paddywagon?

I was thinking that too, maybe a mime is more kill-worthy than a regular clown... originally I thought it was the other way around.
But any clown who doesn't know about Bozo, as Seinfeld clearly illustrates, deserves whatever comes to him.
