Though I agree with you that Houston's leadership does exactly what you'd expect rich old 80 year-old white men to do-- support the 'classical' arts like a bunch of tools, I must say that since moving to Houston I have been impressed by a few of its newer venues.

Growing up, Houston always got passed over by the sort of hip, modern groups that could sellout a medium-sized venue with ease but weren't cut out for playing at one of H-town's mega-stages (i.e. the CWMP in the Woodlands). The tours literally went from Austin to Dallas to Baton Rouge, much to our collective chagrin.

Nowadays, with the Warehouse Live and the House of Blues holding the fort, this doesn't seem to be the case any longer.

Anyway, awesome.

Thing is, places like the Engine Room can't even afford their own parking lot, and people (and bands) get hassled for money by people working for the fat cats who actually own the parking lot when there's a stupid ass Rockets game going on 100 yards away in the Toyota Center.

And that's just one tiny, specific example of Houston artists and their scene getting overlooked in the name of big business.
