Backing up your comments

HaloScan stores all the comments left on your site on it's own servers. These servers are backed up regularly but you may want to backup or export your comments locally, to your own computer.

The files are exported using CAIF (Comment Archive and Interchange Format), and can be used to import into other commenting systems if required.

The export is broken down into batches to lessen the chances of errors and speed up download times.

To backup/export your comments:
  1. On the main HaloScan site, from the menu on the left, select Manage Comments.
  2. In the centre of the page, select the Export tab.
  3. The total number of comments is displayed, as are links to the export batches.
  4. Click an export batch link to download the file to your computer.

Note: You may need to edit the download filename before you start downloading to ensure you don't overwrite previously downloaded export batches.

If you are exporting your comments and want to import them into another commenting system, refer to Phil Ringnalda's post which should provide you with a theoretical basis for completing the task (his post follows the same theories but for a different commenting system).
