Additions:
This second piece of code, the comment link, includes how HaloScan identifies which comments go with which posts. We call this the "comment identifier" and it must be unique for each post. The comment identifier appears twice in the HaloScan comment link, and can be the post title, the post date or a uniquely generated number.
Deletions:
This second piece of code, the comment link, includes how HaloScan identifies which comments go with which posts. We call this the "comment identifier∞" and it must be unique for each post. The comment identifier appears twice in the HaloScan comment link, and can be the post title, the post date or a uniquely generated number.

Additions:
HaloScan requires two pieces of javascript code to be placed on your site. The first piece, which must be in the header area of your page (between the <HEAD> and </HEAD> tags), tells HaloScan the user account that is being used on the site, and ensures your settings are passed through to your blog. The second piece of code is the comment and trackback link (of course you can install only the comment link if you want).

Additions:
Combining these - HaloScan knows, from the first piece of code, which HaloScan account the comments should be stored under and, from the second piece of code, which post the comments should be linked to. The same principles apply for Trackback links.
