I've worked at Harvard since 1986 and I was very active in helping to organize HUCTW. I am 110% pro union and believe it's better to have a union, warts and all, then to not have a union. Unfortunately, HUCTW, despite all the bullshit written about it, is simply another sellout, company union with an entrenched bureaucracy that cares more about maintaining a "special" relationship with managemen

Thanks for the comment, Mike. It is HUCTW's current approach to bargaining, which assumes the university and the workers have common interests, that intrigues me.

It has been my experience, based on bargaining for the Wisconsin State Employees Union (AFSCME Council 24) that interest-based bargaining only works if the management team (and ours) are bargaining in good faith. If management has no commitment to genuine problem-solving, it's more a farce than a breakthrough.

As to the organizing style that HUCTW used and uses, I don't understand why you find

What a fascinating experience this must have been. I am truly envious - six weeks of thinking about what we all do in trying to build our movement. Can't wait to hear more about it.

Hi Morna, Thank you so much for sending this to me and for the blog. What an amazing experience. Interesting about the AFL-CIO, the police/union movement and no media press about this? :-)

- governance and accountability
- sense of entitlement versus respons...

Hi Morna,
This is a wonderful blog, very informative. Great piece on the police union leader. I'm looking forward to hearing the Chomsky tapes once I can get them to work!
