I couldn't be happier about being wrong about the number of electoral votes. Perhaps Karl Rove actually has made the transition from political operative to semi-objective political commentator.

"Actually the answer here is no, these do not drive the economy. They push a driven economy higher." I'd have to disagree with that. They don't solely drive the economy, but consumer spending accounts for 70% of economic growth, and a great many of these consumers are economically middle-class or below. I obviously understand that the economy is also grown by investment and productivity gains f

I'd suggest that you are not necessarily incorrect in thinking that "Obama's modest tax increase on people earning more than $250,000 per year, or his modest increases on capital gains, or his tax breaks (really credits) for low income people" are not, in and of themselves, going to tank the economy.

But what is missing from that basic calculus is the most important equation of all: The affect

wkgdyw, thanks for your thoughtful reply. We'll definitely see within a year or so if I've been fooled, given what the polls seem to show now.

1, I suspect I'm much younger than you, as I wasn't paying taxes when Clinton was elected in 1992. I also suppose, in the same way you don't buy that Obama will tax that little, I don't buy that he'll spend that much, given the economy and the defici...

just a couple quick things:

1 - As you point out, Obama's tax plan isn't that bad, as currently stated. Problem is, nobody believes that the current portrayal reflects the probable reality. $250k gets you into the top 10% of wage earners. How are 10% of taxpayers going to pay for the massive spending he has also promised? 1.6 Trillion (52% of the entire 2008 budget) for Health Care alone?

Wifey, thank you for commenting! $1500 is in fact a lot more. But relatively speaking, and especially considering what we'll hopefully get in return out of the macroeconomy, you are right, it is not much.

All of this leaves me wondering why writers like Kemp and Ferrara, and McCain, et al (to quote Reagan, "there you go again," guys!), think that the answer to all of our problems is, yet again, tax cuts, tax cuts, tax cuts. It's like they've been labotomized.

It's because the GOP has lost sight of anything resembling a pragmatic economic philosophy in favor of staying in power at all costs. An
