Fifteen quail just dashed across the street in front of my window. I love my new place.

With rare exceptions, college professors are not hired because of their teaching abilities. Having some teaching experience - a different matter entirely - might be a consideration in some cases. No matter how much you know about your field nor how competent a teacher you think you are now, I expect that you...

(One of) my new mantra(s) these days is "No Mama Guilt. Ever." Now, of course, some behaviors justify guilt, but deciding to work full-time is not one of them. (And, of course, in my case, it's not a decision, but a necessity.)

She's going to thrive in the daycare setting. We did an licensed in-house daycare for five months (before he got into the campus preschool) and he LOVED it. He still

I don't think anybody should want anything they don't want.

I live with the constant temptation to hang it all up and be a stay at home mom. I might be happy doing that, even. But eventually I'll want to do something else, which means I might as well get the degree. I feel like I should want to get done faster, though, which means I feel like I ought to want more time away from my kids. L...

Thanks for the comments, all. Laura, I would really like to work something out like what you are doing now in terms of how much you see your kids when LD is school age. When she is in certain ways more self sufficient (she can walk home from school, can get her own glass of milk out of the fridge, etc) so I might be able to do some work after school, but at the same time we get to have fun time to...

Don't feel guilty. I had my daughter in full-time daycare even when I worked part-time. Course I was writing a dissertation at the time, too. :)

I'm enjoying the way things are now. The kids are in school and I see them after. We talk and generally spend a fair amount of time together. It's nice to have the regular schedule instead of the crazy two days a week flex thing I had before.

She's going to do great and it sounds like this is a better place for her.

And can I just say, I despise the favoritism shown to some little boys simply because they are boys. Even if D isn't picking up on it now, she probably would eventually. What you're doing sounds much better.

Here's the beauty of your situation: since the full time daycare is cheaper than your 4 day a week nanny was, you shouldn't feel bad if you want to keep her home occasionally.

Yo (16.5mo) has been in daycare 4 days a week since June (the 5th day he's with his grandmother), and he seems to be having a great time. I'm in awe of all the activities they do with the kids. That said, he's gotten sic...

Congrats. My 8 month old started getting up once or twice a night after he caught a bad cold a couple of months ago. We had 3 months of real sleeping through the night before that and the occasional good night now. I think we're getting back to good.

If we look at these kinds of decisions from the principled side they are very easy to make. You know how you feel, and it's very clear. But the practical side begs to be considered and that is where the decision becomes murkier and the heart must collaborate with the mind. It is an unenviable position to be in.
