first answer in the grid: MENES. founder of the first dynasty! UNITER of the upper and lower kingdoms! he's a big deal. quizbowl history knowledge also chimed in with WALPOLE (robert, father of gothic novelist horace). woot. ["Abyssinia"] less so. i thought the answer was going to be ETHIOPE or something along those lines.

the MINOR clue is one of my favorites this year. big smile there. JUICE,

Still a nice puzzle, but that EXENE/ELLE crossing was a complete coin-flip, I agree.

ELATE/REL/ELLA/WASIT would have even worked for me there in a pinch, but that was just nasty.
Heck, even UNIONIST/SELIG (sacrificing the Z) with TBONE/REB/ELLO would have been painful but gettable. Of course, as my name isn't on any puzzles, I have exactly zero credibility on this one - Matt can likely write b...

Yes, that was me. I updated my browser and the default name went away.

I see that cruciverb links to my server, so the "vv" prefix may affect Kevn's perception. If we change it now we'll break lots of links, most of which I don't even know about.

Martin (that's you posing as Anonymous, no?), on Fridays, Cruciverb posts a link to "Village Voice." I don't know how many people use Cruciverb vs. Puzzle Pointers—I switched to mostly using Cruciverb after a few years of religious Puzzle Pointing—but I suspect the Cruciverb puzzle-downloaders are inclined to call it the Voice puzzle.

Orange,

I post the Ink Well puzzles in a way that Will Johnston's calendar page can find it. We've never changed the prefix that enables that synch from "vv." Is that what's causing you all the angst? The page is titled Ink Well (Chicago Reader), so if I swear the prefix really stands for "very, very fun puzzle" are we done?

Or is there another centroid of reactionary puzzle reference tha

Spork, please be advised that there is no such thing as the Village Voice crossword by Ben Tausig. I have grumbled and cavilled numerous times about this misnomer, but nobody listens. Ink Well was the Voice puzzle for a while, but the Voice axed the puzzle ages ago in a cost-cutting move (but various crossword sites still call it the Village Voice puzzle). Before the Voice, it was the Chicago Read...

Nevermind. I just did the previous Tausig at Ind Weekly and they're apparently one week ahead of the Village Voice. In other words, I just did next week's Ink Well. Oh well.

Also, the San Fran Guardian link goes to a blank white page. I went to their website but can't find a crossword puzzle, and they don't seem to have a search feature anywhere on their site. Strange.

Alex,

The Tausig puzzle you linked to at the Independent Weekly is not the Ink Well/Village Voice puzzle. Not this week's anyway. I just did it and I'm 99% sure I've never done that one before. Hmm.
