It sounds like the movie of The Thing is a lot more exciting than the book. More monsters and people getting eaten and whatnot.

OK, I'm down with that. It does suck when things that used to mean something become expected and automatic. I sometimes find myself saying things like "thanks SO much" when it's really deserved, but that always comes out sounding sarcastic.

phronk: the argument wasn't that actual gratitude wasn't ever felt when saying thank you, it's just that society now expects these words said at every transaction or exchange, which is sometimes a lie.

example given: child gets bar of soap for christmas, but is expected to say "thank you" to aunt mildred anyway. this type of thing takes away from the actual times when we feel grateful.

Thats my bus addiction too!!! (now that my commute to school is 40 minutes) I'm loving DNTO's guest hosts, especially when Jonathanwas on because i've crushed him since his days on street cents. He did a Hali-famous episode and it almost made my cry. Anywhoo you should check out the 'This american life' podcast it may favourite. Cheers.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've missed Sook-Yin from back when MuchMusic was worth watching. I often find myself listening to podcasts on the bus too, and my music collection feels neglected, but I kinda feel like I'm actually learning something from podcasts.

I dunno about the 'thank you' stuff here. Maybe it's just me, but I truly mean to express appreciation for something when I say thank...
