I have to say I would totally shop at a mom and pop store given the choice, but unfortunately the area where I live (NY/CT) the mom and pop hardware stores are 10 times more expensive than the big box stores (and always have been, this isn;t something new). So unfortunately with the economy the way it is, I can't even afford to help out the little guys...

I am nostalgic as you are only with lumber yards. I am from Detroit and I used to love going to the lumber yard with my grandfather. The smell of freshly cut wood always takes me back. He used to own a butcher shop on Whittier. My dad and uncle ran it with him. He lost it when supermarkets increased drastically in the 70's. The quality of the meat he sold and the service he provided, was much grea...

Just found your site and LOVE IT! After finding old photos of my great grandmothers, I have a new obsession with turn of the century and early 20th century photography. AWESOME.

It was Richie who told me, when our air conditioner stopped, that there is a separate fuse box for the a.c., outside the house. My wife was quite impressed when I popped new fuses in. I didn't mention Richie.

Thanks for the great story. There are so many out there waiting to be told and so little time- wouldn't it be great if there were a new WPA Writers Project before all of the little stores with history go away, cleared for big box stores.
I'm trying to highlight some of the quirky little places (many new, though) in my neighborhood of Portland, Oregon, and your blog is encouraging me to do more- go...

I just returned to New York after five weeks in Detroit, driving up and down Gratiot almost daily. Every time I passed the Busy Bee I wanted to go in, and now I see that I should have. Next time.

One of the many things I love about Detroit: there's room for history. The Busy Bee would have closed years ago if it were in New York. The space would be more profitable as a "Restoration Hardware." O

Great story! I live in central Illinois and love our local hardware stores. I love that they still carry the cleaning products my mom used.

Reminds me also of this poem, which you might enjoy.
